School
Wellness Policies
The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization
Act of 2004 required all school districts (that recieve funding for school
lunch programs) to develop wellness policies by 2006-07 school year. Wellness
policies must include goals for nutrition and physical education as well
as guidelines for foods and beverages served throughout the school campus.

NonFood
Reward Contest for Teachers
Food is commonly used to reward students for good
behavior and academic performance. Using food as reward can have negative
consequences that go far beyond the short term benefits of good behavior
or performance. It can compromise learning, contribute to poor health,
poor eating habits, a preference for sweets and overconsumption.
The Non Food Rewards Contest collects ideas from
teachers on non food rewards that can be used in the classroom. The ideas
will be compiled and distributed to all K-6 teachers in Klamath County.
The most creative ideas will receive a $30 gift card to Borders. Teachers
can complete this simple entry form and return it to Melissa Klegseth
at the Klamath County Health Department via e-mail (mklegseth@co.klamath.or.us),
fax (885-3638), or mail (403 Pine Street, Klamath Falls, OR 97601).

Physical
Activity and Schools
In the push for higher test scores why should teachers care about physical
activity? Research indicates that exercise may help school performance
and it clearly is not detrimental.
